PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The transition between summer and fall continues to bring instability to the atmosphere over the Pacific Northwest.
Instability was visible over the Sheridan area last week, on Friday, September 4, thanks to KOIN 6 viewer Mary Wilder’s funnel cloud photo. This view of a funnel cloud forming over the Willamette Valley comes just a day after the Portland National Weather Service issued a rare tornado warning for parts of Columbia County on Thursday, September 3.
Temperature swings that typically begin in September help destabilize the atmosphere. Thunderstorms, heavy rain, small hail, and even a funnel cloud or weak tornado are possible during these seasonal changes in both the fall and spring months.
