After chaotic takeover attempt, judge to decide who controls People’s Food Co-op

KALAMAZOO, MI — Parties locked in a dispute over control of the People’s Food Co-op will present their arguments at a Sept. 14 hearing at Kalamazoo County Gull Road Justice Complex.

Judge Gary Giguere Jr., who heads Kalamazoo County’s civil division, will decide whether the current board can continue to oversee the PFC, or whether those directors were legally recalled by PFC members last month and replaced by a new board.

If Giguere rules in favor of the latter, it could end a power struggle brewing since January. The battle came to a dramatic head on Aug. 28, when the new board members tried to fire the store’s current manager and take physical control of the building, a confrontation that led to police intervention…
