1863 — Union forces prepared the final move on Little Rock. During the Little Rock Campaign, Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele decided September 9 to cross the Arkansas River east of the capital. Engineers began a pontoon bridge at Terry’s Ferry while a diversion threatened Buck’s Ford. Union troops crossed the next day, contributing directly to Little Rock’s capture.
1865 — Native American treaty conference at Fort Smith. At the postwar Fort Smith Conference, U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs Dennis Cooley announced on September 9 seven conditions under which tribes that had allied with the Confederacy could renew relations with the United States.
