Kenny Rogers Set the Record Straight on His Relationship with Dolly Parton
In a candid 2014 interview with Dan Rather that has recently resurfaced, country music legend Kenny Rogers addressed longstanding rumors about a romantic relationship with fellow icon Dolly Parton. Despite their decades of undeniable on-stage chemistry and playful flirting, Rogers made it clear that their bond never crossed into romance.
“We flirted with each other for 30 years and it was much more electric,” Rogers told Rather when asked if their connection had ever become romantic. However, he explained that both he and Parton believed that “once you consummate a relationship like that, it loses something.” He added, “So we did some massive flirting in front of the nation, but there was never anything more than that.”
Rogers also expressed his deep respect for Parton’s longtime marriage to Carl Thomas Dean, who passed away in March 2025 after nearly six decades together. At the height of Rogers and Parton’s musical collaboration, Rogers was married to actress Marianne Gordon.
Their professional partnership produced some of country music’s most beloved hits, including the 1983 classic “Islands in the Stream.” They continued to collaborate on songs like “Real Love,” “Love Is Strange,” and “Undercover,” culminating in their 2013 reunion track, “You Can’t Make Old Friends.”
Reflecting on that song, Parton said it resonated with her personally and with many friends, describing it as “not a sad song, but it’s melancholy.” Rogers noted that the song explores the nature of special friendships.
The two often shared a warm and humorous rapport, with Parton joking about Rogers’ many marriages: “And he’s been married about 40 times – I couldn’t catch him between wives!” Rogers passed away in March 2020 at the age of 81.
