President Donald Trump is slated to make a brief appearance during the closing stages of this week’s Irish Open, held at his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare. Defending champion Rory McIlroy acknowledges that Trump’s presence will introduce a different dynamic, but he remains focused on the competition.
Trump is scheduled for a weekend trip to Ireland, and given that the Irish Open is taking place at his resort, it is expected he may stop by and possibly present the trophy to the winner on Sunday.
McIlroy, who has previously played golf with Trump, chose not to discuss political matters when asked about the president’s anticipated visit. Instead, he emphasized concentrating on the tournament.
“It’s going to be different, but Trump’s golf resorts have hosted events on the PGA Tour, European Tour, and LIV Golf,” McIlroy told BBC Sport. “He’s a big golf fan and a strong supporter of the game.
The Doonbeg course is beautiful – it’s my first time playing it. While it’s not a traditional links course, it is an Americanized version, and it should present a solid challenge for the week.”
McIlroy recognizes the logistical complexities Trump’s visit may bring but is pragmatic about the situation. “Obviously, there are challenges, but if he wants to come and watch the Irish Open, who are we to say no?”
With the Trump name prominently displayed at the resort’s entrance, it would be difficult to bar the former president from attending the event.
Beyond the immediate spotlight on this week’s Irish Open, the tournament may also serve as a precursor to future major events at Trump-owned venues. Notably, Turnberry in Scotland, a historic venue for The Open Championship, has not hosted the event since Trump acquired it in 2014. The R&A, organizer of The Open, has cited logistical concerns for the absence, leaving the door open for potential future discussions.
As the Irish Open unfolds, all eyes will be on the competition and how the presence of a high-profile visitor influences the atmosphere at Doonbeg.
