LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Unseasonably hot conditions will grip the South Plains Wednesday, with record-breaking temperatures possible before a brief cooldown arrives Thursday.
Afternoon highs Wednesday will climb into the upper 90s to low 100s across the region, with temperatures off the Caprock potentially reaching the lower 100s. Daily record temperatures at Lubbock (99°) and Childress (102°) are expected to be threatened once again.
This is nearly 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. The center of a strong upper-level high remains anchored over the South Plains, keeping the heat locked in place.
Afternoon storms possible Wednesday
While heat will be the main story, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening across the northern South Plains.
Any storms that develop could pose a threat. Atmospheric conditions could allow storms to produce strong wind gusts in excess of 50 mph, though the overall risk for severe weather remains low.
Storm development overnight will depend on outflow boundaries from overnight convection and surface heating, the timing and placement of these boundaries remain uncertain.
