Plea deal reached almost one year after deadly Highland Square shooting

(WJW) — A man accused of unintentionally shooting and killing an innocent bystander at Highland Square in Akron last October has pleaded guilty.

Court records show Emahni Thomas, 24, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a firearm specification. He was facing reckless homicide and other charges prior to the plea deal.

In October of 2025, Thomas was allegedly shooting at someone else when he shot and killed 25-year-old Timothy Hutchinson. At the time police said, Hutchinson was “struck unintentionally” during a shootout between two suspects. Police said evidence suggested that Thomas, shot Hutchinson on accident when he returned fire to another suspect in the case.
