The life and sacrifice of Sean Tallon, a 26-year-old Irish American firefighter who perished during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, have been commemorated both in New York and in his father’s native village in Ireland. Tallon served as a marine and a probationary firefighter at Ten House, the firehouse located directly across from the World Trade Center, and was among the first responders on that fateful day.
Born in the Bronx and raised in Yonkers-home to one of New York’s largest Irish communities-Sean proudly maintained his Irish roots. His father came from Donadea, County Kildare, while his mother hailed from Millstreet, County Cork.
The family’s strong connection to their heritage was evident in Sean’s life. Described by relatives as a devoted Catholic attending Mass every Sunday, he was also passionate about traditional Irish music, often playing the button accordion and sharing lively reels and jigs with those around him.
Just weeks before the attacks, Sean had visited Ireland with his parents, purchasing an Irish rugby shirt which he only removed the tags from on the morning of September 11. His mother, Eileen, recalled that morning fondly, remembering Sean’s bright smile and their warm conversation before he left for work.
Tragically, Sean’s life was cut short later that day when the North Tower collapsed. He was last seen on the 31st floor, ascending with full gear in an effort to reach and rescue those trapped above.
Sean Tallon is remembered as a hero in both his Yonkers community and in Donadea, where a memorial was erected in his honor in 2003 at Donadea Forest Park. The memorial features twin limestone pillars inscribed with the names of Tallon and his fellow FDNY firefighters who lost their lives that day. In 2021, a ceremony was held at the site to mark the 20th anniversary of the attacks, with wreath-laying and a guard of honor by local emergency services.
The Tallon family’s loss reflects the deep impact of 9/11 on Irish American families, as nearly one-third of the approximately 3,000 victims were of Irish descent. Their memory continues to be honored on both sides of the Atlantic, a testament to the enduring bond between Ireland and its diaspora.
