On his latest album, Rent Money, troubadour Pokey LaFarge knows there are few certainties in life beyond putting in a hard day’s work and paying the rent. With that in mind, he’s hard at work touring and preparing to bring his new tunes back to St. Louis for a rip-roaring show at Delmar Hall on September 12.
Pokey LaFarge, originally born Andrew Heissler, is known for an intoxicating throwback sound that mixes genres such as Americana, country, rock ‘n’ roll, Texas swing, and blues, among many others. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, LaFarge made his name busking around the United States after finishing high school, but he found greater success after taking root in St. Louis in his mid-20s.
“Living in St. Louis helped me find my voice and who I was,” LaFarge says. “I already knew who I was stylistically and fashion-wise, but the South City Three, my old band, helped heighten that and bring that to life. We spent 200-250 days a year together, for eight or nine years. That has a lot of influence on you musically and personally. I owe a lot to those guys for the time they put in and their creativity.”…
