Stephen Colbert is making a late-night comeback just four months after his long-running show was canceled.
The former Late Show host will appear as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, September 15. This will be Colbert’s first TV appearance since his farewell in May.
Colbert’s departure followed CBS’s decision to end The Late Show after 33 years on the air. He had been at the helm for 11 seasons. Despite signing a five-year contract extension in 2023, the network announced in July 2025 that the show was ending, citing financial reasons.
In a May interview with The New York Times, Colbert expressed understanding of CBS’s rationale but also hinted at underlying issues. He referenced the network’s legal battles and changes in the broadcast landscape, noting the challenges posed by streaming and platforms like YouTube. Colbert suggested that while the network’s business model may be struggling, the timing of the cancellation raised questions.
Interestingly, Colbert and Kimmel will face off the night before his guest spot when both shows compete for Outstanding Variety Series at the 78th Emmy Awards on September 14.
