A 72-year-old man convicted in one of southwest Florida’s most notorious serial murder investigations is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on Thursday.
Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. was sentenced to death for the 1996 kidnapping and strangling of Richard Allen Montgomery. Montgomery’s mutilated body was discovered in a wooded area of Charlotte County, where investigators uncovered the remains of at least six people over a three-year period in what became known as the “Hog Trail Murders.”
Conahan has maintained his innocence, arguing that the state’s case relied entirely on circumstantial evidence. Though law enforcement named him as a person of interest in several other area homicides, prosecutors never charged him in those deaths…
