The world just tied its hottest month on record. Boulder already had the receipts.
On Thursday, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that August 2026 produced a global average surface-air temperature of 16.96 degrees Celsius, or about 62.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Because the difference was within the dataset’s uncertainty range, August tied July 2023 as the warmest month recorded.
August was 1.65 degrees Celsius, or nearly 3 degrees Fahrenheit, warmer than the estimated global average during the second half of the 19th century, before fossil fuels were burned on an industrial scale.
