Drivers in Kenai, Soldotna, and other communities north of 60° north latitude can begin using studded tires on Wednesday, September 16. The same date applies to the entire paved Sterling Highway, including the stretch through Anchor Point to Homer.
For drivers on the southern Kenai Peninsula, however, turning off the highway can mean crossing into a different set of rules.
Although the Sterling Highway has an exception allowing studs beginning Sept. 16 regardless of latitude, other paved roads south of 60° north remain closed to studded tires until Oct. 1.
