NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Hundreds of people are now asking that their names be removed from a petition that seeks to end auto racing at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, claiming they were given deceptive information.
A community coalition called Restore Our Fairgrounds had the petition certified in June in an attempt to remove “auto racing” as a required activity at the fairgrounds. Instead, the group wants to replace the racing requirement with the term “affordable housing and/or workforce housing.” It also requires that the Fair Board continue to host fairs, expo center events and flea markets.
Decline to Sign Nashville, a group that opposes the petition, says on its website that the city voted in 2011 to protect racing at the Fairgrounds by writing it into the city’s charter. Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s office has also said the city is obligated to maintain the speedway…
