Unauthorized land clearing on a Great Falls property containing a historic cemetery has prompted county enforcement action and concern from nearby residents, some of whom said they did not know the burial ground was there.
Fairfax County issued a notice of violation and stop-work order for 1002 Sherman Court after an inspection at the end of July found approximately 28,674 square feet of land had been disturbed without an approved plan, permit or land-disturbance approval.
According to the Aug. 6 notice, inspectors observed “vegetation and tree removal, grade changes ranging from 3 to 10 inches, several loads of fill and a stockpile of mulched material.” The county ordered the property owner, ROO Properties LLC, to cease all land-disturbing activity, install erosion and sediment controls and stabilize exposed areas with seed, straw or mulch…
