Written by 24-year-old Ray Dorset while he worked at Timex in London, the track started as a carefree tribute to the joys of summer. Soon after, Dorset and his band laid down the recording in a London studio, and the single was released in June 1970 as Mungo Jerry’s debut offering.
The song quickly propelled the band into the spotlight, topping charts across multiple countries including the UK, Norway, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada, France, Ireland, and Mexico. In the United States, it climbed to an impressive No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, narrowly missing the top spot.
