A person reportedly fell more than 20 feet near a trail above Black’s Beach, triggering a multi-unit emergency response from San Diego Fire-Rescue Department lifeguards, firefighters and medics. The patient sustained serious injuries and was eventually transferred to an ambulance before being taken to a local hospital.
According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the response involved a wide array of resources, including ground units R43, E52, B5, 31S and 4L, along with SDPD officers, all converging near the trail above Black’s Beach. Copter 3 was requested to assist with the rescue and ultimately arrived on scene, according to the same agency post. The linked Los Angeles Times article reports a separate 2019 paraglider crash at Torrey Pines Gliderport and does not report the current rescue.
Copter 3 itself is a Sikorsky S-70i Firehawk helicopter operated out of Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, per Firehouse. On the ground, SDFD’s Lifeguard Division also maintains Rescue 44, a custom 45,000-pound Pierce Saber 4×4 vehicle fitted with a rear-mounted crane and specialized rescue apparatus, according to Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment. In its own post about the rescue, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department urged visitors to Black’s Beach to proceed with caution and to use designated trails.
