Entire Sac Bee sports team eliminated in sweeping McClatchy layoffs

The entire sports department at the newspaper in California’s capital city has been eliminated as part of McClatchy’s nationwide layoffs.

On Thursday, the publishing giant laid off more than 90 employees at newspapers across the country, according to journalism union the NewsGuild. McClatchy owns three newspapers in California’s Central Valley, and all were hit hard by the layoffs.

The Fresno Bee saw seven layoffs, including an accountability reporter, an investigative reporter and what NewsGuild described as the “last remaining employee of the groundbreaking bilingual publication of Vide en el Valle.” Just north in Modesto, three members of the 12-person newsroom were laid off, including the paper’s high school sports reporter. NewsGuild wrote that the layoffs come after three more reporters recently left roles, which now are “not expected to be filled.”…
