A Library of tools – and a community built on sharing

What if you needed a tool for a small project but buying it would cost hundreds of dollars, and afterward, it might spend the rest of its life gathering dust in your garage? In Sonoma County, you may not need to buy it yourself.

The Sonoma County Tool Library, located at 427 Mendocino Ave. in Santa Rosa, offers more than 1,000 tools to anyone who lives or works in the county, with no charge to borrow them.

The library was founded in 2008 by Dustin Zuckerman. Martin Reed, who first discovered the library as a borrower, became its executive director this past January after learning Zuckerman was considering closing it…
