Temperatures are turning up slightly ahead of a couple of fronts the next few days. Highs shifting back to the 90s will become common into the weekend and early next week. Some temps may try to push the century mark to the southwest near the Oklahoma state line. The warmth we encounter in this stretch is a shell of the extreme heat we have faced for the last several weeks.
Heading into Friday Football Fever this evening, a few storms are possible near the Nebraska state line to the northwest. There is a higher probability of storms in Nebraska than on the Kansas side this evening. Storms may struggle to hold together overnight.
That said, I cannot rule out a stray shower or storm near the Wichita area early Saturday morning.
A front sags southward and will interact with an unstable atmosphere late Saturday afternoon into the evening. The front’s position will be the telling factor as to where these storms fire.
Central and Eastern Kansas have the better chance of rain. Model guidance the last few days has kept initiation over northern Kansas, but I have some concerns of a more southerly extent. A few storms could become severe with damaging winds and large hail.
This front will washout by Sunday. Any remaining rain early in the day will wane and temperatures will heat up. Another front enters the picture early next week. It will be a slow-mover and take time crossing Kansas’ path. It may not clear until next Wednesday.
This keeps southern Kansas hotter with those behind the boundary milder. This front also focuses renewed daily chances for showers and storms. With the drought we are in, I think it is safe to say we all agree to bring it!
