PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — More than two years after a Northeast Portland shooting, a man has been sentenced for killing another who tried to intervene in what he believed was an assault.
Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Kelly Skye sentenced Arvoni Hayes to 18 years in prison and three years of post-prison supervision on Friday. The 25-year-old man was originally arrested in connection to the death of Aaron McInnis in September 2024.

Portland police found McInnis on Northeast 55th Avenue and Hassalo Street on July 14, 2024 around 11:30 p.m. The 30-year-old man first approached the vehicle Hayes was occupying less than 15 minutes before, court records from his attorney Seth White show.
White stated that the witness had told McInnis he believed Hayes was “either raping or assaulting” the woman in the SUV. Both she and Hayes told McInnis and the other man they were okay after the two approached the vehicle, records claimed…
