A man was shot in the thigh Friday evening at the corner of Jumonville and Watson streets in Pittsburgh’s Bluff neighborhood, sending him to the hospital in stable condition as investigators worked to identify a suspect. Police have made no arrests and have not named anyone of interest in the case.
Officers were dispatched to the intersection at 4:45 p.m. Friday after emergency calls reported a shooting, according to WPXI. Responding officers found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the thigh, and EMS crews transported him in stable condition. As of Friday night, WTAE reported that police had not identified any suspects and that the investigation remained ongoing.
A Block With a Recent Violent History
This is not the first serious incident to draw police to this stretch of the Bluff this year. In January, Pittsburgh Police Zone 2 responded to a violent assault just up the road at Jumonville Street and Boulevard of the Allies, where officers found a man hospitalized in critical condition after being pistol-whipped, per records from the City of Pittsburgh Public Safety Department. That same month, an early-morning, multi-jurisdictional police pursuit that began in Swissvale ended at Forbes Avenue and Jumonville Street when a suspect wanted on homicide warrants crashed his vehicle, fled on foot, and was ultimately located on a rooftop using a police drone, as reported by CBS News Pittsburgh.
The corner sits in the middle of an active construction zone tied to Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s $291 million University Line Bus Rapid Transit project, which is building new PRTX transit stations along Fifth and Forbes avenues to connect Downtown with Oakland, according to a release from Pittsburgh Regional Transit. The ongoing work is a detail that could factor into how investigators piece together witness accounts and any available surveillance footage from the corridor.
