A 19-year-old Chicago man has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in federal prison for an armed carjacking that prosecutors say was set up by a woman who arranged to meet the victim, then secretly recruited men to rob him. The woman and another accomplice will be sentenced in the coming weeks.
James Hampton pleaded guilty earlier this year to federal carjacking and firearm charges, and U.S. District Judge John Robert Blakey sentenced him this month, officials said.
The victim met Hampton’s co-defendant, Meliza Calderon, weeks before the October 23, 2024, carjacking, and the two continued communicating before agreeing to meet that day, prosecutors said.
