A 44-year-old Tampa man died early Saturday after losing control of his BMW motorcycle on a rain-soaked exit ramp linking southbound Interstate 75 to Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County, overturning and striking a guardrail. The crash happened at 4:40 a.m., and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Tampa Bay 28 report on the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said the man was traveling southbound on I-75 at a high rate of speed before he lost control on the wet roadway while navigating the ramp. No other vehicles were involved, per the same account. The motorcycle overturned and collided with a guardrail, according to FHP.
A Ramp Rebuilt for Safety, Now the Scene of Tragedy
The stretch of roadway where the crash occurred has a recent engineering history aimed at reducing exactly this kind of conflict. The Florida Department of Transportation completed a major overhaul of the interchange, known as Exit 261, in February 2020, relocating the exit point nearly a mile north and building a two-lane collector-distributor ramp to ease the merge into the I-4 split, according to FDOT Tampa Bay. More recently, the state broke ground in March 2026 on an $8.6 million project along eastbound I-4 near the I-75 ramps, adding an auxiliary lane meant to reduce traffic conflicts, with completion expected in spring 2027, per FDOT Tampa Bay.
Weather is believed to have played a central role in Saturday’s crash. Research on Florida roadway conditions shows that water accumulation as shallow as one-tenth of an inch can cause tires to hydroplane, while wet thermoplastic lane markings become especially slick and can sharply cut motorcycle tire traction compared with ordinary wet asphalt, according to Cappy Law.
