It’s official: Class of 2027 is the last that must pass Regents exams

ALBANY — The Board of Regents told the State Education Department on Monday to get to work on making all Regents exams optional.

It’s been two years since the board adopted the “Portrait of a Graduate,” which proposed new graduation requirements. It envisions a transformed system in which students demonstrate their knowledge through special projects instead of with a one-time, mostly multiple-choice test. At the time, the goal was to shift from exams to projects by 2027.

But as recently as this summer, Education Department officials began saying it would happen in 2029…
