Severe Weather Strikes Northeast: Flash Flooding and Rescues Amid Torrential Rains
A powerful line of severe thunderstorms has battered several Northeastern states over the weekend, causing widespread flash flooding and disruption. States including Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, and Massachusetts faced intense rainfall that forced residents to abandon vehicles, prompted numerous emergency rescues, and led to business closures.
During ABC’s World News Tonight, Linsey Davis, filling in for David Muir this weekend, reported on the dangerous situation along the I-95 corridor, where floodwaters engulfed roads and communities struggled with rapidly rising water levels. “Floodwaters swallowed roads across Massachusetts, turning familiar paths into treacherous currents and leaving some drivers no choice but to leave their cars behind,” Davis explained.
Graphic footage shown during the broadcast captured submerged streets in Paramus, New Jersey, and Westport, Connecticut, one of the hardest-hit areas. In these communities, fast-rising waters threatened homes and businesses, forcing street closures and over two dozen high-water rescues across the Tri-State region.
Correspondent Perry Russom detailed the extent of the damage, noting that more than four inches of rain fell within a few hours in many areas. In Westport alone, authorities reported six to seven inches of rain, leading to dramatic scenes of flooded roads and vehicles underwater. At least 13 people were rescued amid raging floodwaters there.
The broadcast also showed unsettling clips of runners caught in floodwaters during a half marathon in Paramus, with several participants submerged to waist level as the fast-moving water surprised them. Local residents described the situation as dire, with many unable to reach work due to impassable roads.
Elsewhere in the country, severe weather continued to disrupt activities. In South Carolina, a college football game was delayed for over an hour due to storms, while in California, a wildfire near Sacramento has burned more than 4,000 acres and is currently 25% contained. Fire crews are actively working to control the blaze amid ongoing evacuation orders in two counties.
The severe weather events prompted concern and reactions from the public on social media. Some expressed prayers for safety and protection, while others pointed to climate change and political leadership as contributing factors. Many shared their sympathies with those affected by the flooding and wildfires.
