WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Crews responded to a structure fire in Watervliet on Monday night. The Watervliet Police Department is advising the public to avoid the area of 19th Street and 4th Avenue.

Watervliet Fire Chief Thomas Garrett said when they arrived flames were shooting out the entire side of the building facing 21st Street. He also said firefighters were inside when the roof collapsed, but they got out quickly.
“We’ll be here all night,” Garrett said. “This is a tough fire. The roof is collapsed; we’ve got fire underneath the roof and we’re trying to get to it now.”

Police say 19th Street is currently closed while emergency crews work at the scene. People are asked to use an alternate route.
