Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Sunday dismissed questions about his association with controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, emphasizing that the focus of the campaign should remain on pressing issues facing Michigan voters.
During an appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” correspondent Weijia Jiang inquired about concerns from Jewish Michiganders regarding El-Sayed’s connection to Piker, a far-left political commentator who has accompanied the candidate on the campaign trail. Jiang pointed out that while El-Sayed has condemned antisemitism generally, he has not directly addressed Piker’s contentious rhetoric.
El-Sayed sidestepped the question, stating that voters in Michigan are more concerned with everyday challenges such as rising grocery prices, healthcare, and environmental issues. “With all due respect, this is the third time you’ve asked about a Twitch streamer in California,” El-Sayed responded.
“I’ve done four events in Michigan this week. You know what didn’t come up?
Twitch streamers in California.” He added, “I’m not interested in having a conversation about streamers in California because they are not raising the prices of gas and groceries.”
This is not the first time Democrats have pushed back on inquiries about Piker. Last month, Rep.
Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., criticized reporters for focusing on Piker, accusing Republicans of attempting to shift the race’s narrative. Dingell also voiced disagreement with some of Piker’s statements, particularly those she found objectionable regarding women.
Hasan Piker has been an outspoken supporter of El-Sayed, even urging Democrats to penalize party members who do not back the Michigan candidate. However, following backlash over Piker’s remarks perceived as antisemitic-such as a controversial comment suggesting potential threats to American Jews-El-Sayed distanced himself, stating he had no plans to campaign further with the streamer.
The inflammatory comments prompted widespread condemnation from prominent Democratic figures, including Senators Cory Booker, Jon Ossoff, and others, as well as Rep. Hillary Scholten, who labeled Piker “a hack who thrives on hate, shock and awe.”
El-Sayed addressed the controversy by reaffirming his commitment to combating antisemitism and ensuring the safety of Jewish communities. “Antisemitism is a scourge, and we need to address it in all its forms,” he said, emphasizing his dedication to protecting all Americans from hate and intimidation.
As the Michigan Senate race continues to draw close scrutiny, El-Sayed appears intent on redirecting attention to policy issues that resonate with voters, steering the conversation away from his ties to divisive figures like Hasan Piker.
