KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. — More than four months after every apartment at Wildwood Off Main was condemned, former tenants and local officials say the case has raised broader questions about renters’ rights, landlord responsibilities and how communities respond when housing is deemed unsafe.
The Kalamazoo Area Building Authority condemned the entire complex in May, forcing hundreds of residents to move out with little notice. The condemnation followed concerns that included loose stairs and rotting decks. Months later, dangerous decks have been removed, temporary stairs are in place and new ones are being installed.
