U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained four people in Montclair’s Fourth Ward on Monday morning, frightening families on their way to a nearby elementary school, according to multiple residents and video.
The video shared with Montclair Local and posted to social media shows masked agents wearing dark green vests leading two handcuffed men toward an unmarked gray SUV. The letters “ERO” the abbreviation for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations show on one of the vests. Another agent opens the doors of the pickup truck and leans inside the vehicle, according to the video. In a separate video, agents are seen struggling with the men as they handcuff them.
“I am extremely disappointed and deeply concerned by the report that four individuals were detained by ICE in Montclair today while on their way to work,” Mayor Dr. Renee Baskerville said. “Montclair has always represented something larger than a municipal boundary. We are a community built on the principals of diversity, inclusion, dignity and respect for every person who calls Montclair home or visits our township.”
