A long-vacant midcentury motel that once symbolized downtown Lubbock’s disinvestment is now providing affordable housing for local residents.
Developed by Housing Trust Group (HTG), AM Affordable Housing, and Thoman & Butler, the $22.6 million Inn Town Lofts transformed the historic Jim Kimmel Center into 56 affordable apartments while preserving many of the landmark property’s defining architectural features.
The motel was originally constructed as the In Town Inn in 1964 by local firm Schmidt & Stuart Architects. Over the years, the motel underwent modifications and fell into disrepair. When a deadly tornado ripped through the downtown in the 1970s, investment shifted to the suburbs, and the property languished for decades.
