An oceanfront hotel building in downtown Myrtle Beach could be replaced with a newer, larger 20-story tower as developers eye the Breakers Resort area for a revamp.
After the Myrtle Beach Planning Commission unanimously recommended denying plans to axe a 107-unit building and build a 230-unit hotel building in its place, the matter found a favorable reception Tuesday with Myrtle Beach City Council.
Council members passed first readings of an ordinance to amend the 5.4-acre 21st Avenue North Ocean Front Planned Unit Development (PUD) by replacing the current hotel building with a larger tower, allow for 207 corresponding parking spaces and close and relocate two oceanfront alleys, as well as one second-row alley.
