RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Lifelong Richmond resident Kathryn Reid said her dad was born on a kitchen table because black people weren’t allowed to go to hospitals. Several years later, she was born at the Old Richmond Community Hospital.
“It was kind of groundbreaking to have a hospital. Black physicians, Black nurses, Black patients and it should be preserved,” Reid said.
In the 1930s, Black physicians and community leaders opened the Old Richmond Community Hospital on 1209 Overbrook Road. Now, Virginia Union is advocating for a special use permit to build an apartment complex on top of the hospital…
