In August, as temperatures regularly hit triple digits, more than 2,200 Bexar County residents faced eviction from their homes.
According to data from the Bexar County Justice of the Peace Courts, more than 7,200 households had eviction cases filed against them this summer. If the pace continues, landlords are on track to file eviction cases against 27,400 households — about 9% of all renters, according to the latest census data — by the end of the year.
Not all filings end in eviction: Tenants can negotiate a payment plan or prove that the landlord did not follow proper procedures. After a decline during the pandemic, about 55% of filings resulted in eviction in 2024. Despite a drop in total filings in 2025, about 1,200 more households were evicted than the previous year, according to data made public by the city.
The drop in evictions during the initial years of the pandemic was due to the federal eviction moratorium, according to Veronica Garcia, the director of city’s Neighborhood and Housing Services Department. Garcia also noted that the post-pandemic increase “is not solely attributable to population growth.”
An Express-News analysis found that the eviction rate per 100 renting households was higher in 2025 than 2019.
