12 people charged for running fraud home daycares in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Twelve people have been charged in home daycare frauds in San Diego, defrauding more than $10 million of taxpayer money that was supposed to go to help low-income families pay for childcare. Instead it went to fake daycares.

“If you lie about babysitting, we will have to babysit you in prison,” Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald of the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division said on Tuesday. “These were made up fake daycares that, day after day, month after month, year after year, billed the taxpayer for allegedly taking care of children, but there were no children, there were no daycares.”

The 12 defendants are accused of lying on attendance records, claiming they were caring for children, who weren’t even at the daycare, while raking in millions of dollars in federal payments…
