17 charged in Baton Rouge area PPP fraud crackdown

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Authorities charged 17 people in the Baton Rouge region as part of a nationwide effort targeting Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) fraud.

The Middle District of Louisiana stated that fraud in the state involved $5 million in alleged intended or actual losses. Nationwide, the effort from June 12 to Sept. 1 led to 160 criminal defendants for alleged fraud totaling $245 million in intended losses to taxpayers.

“Millions of taxpayer dollars have been wrongfully obtained through fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. Our office is committed to finding those who have scammed the system, and we will prosecute them to the fullest extent possible,” U.S. Attorney Kurt Wall said.
