The History of 1914 S. Harrison
One of those homes just happens to be located at 1914 S. Harrison. This home was originally built in 1910. It was later included on the National Register of Historic Places. The United States Department of the Interior listed it in 1992. The historical marker tells us that it was the J.B. Raney house. However, when you start digging into the details of the home, it’s hard to find the exact history.
It’s rumored to have been the home of former Amarillo Mayor Ross Rogers for a while. The slate walkway to the house is from the Helium Monument.
How the Travis Family Restored a Condemned Home
Here’s what we do know. The home was purchased in 1988 by Dale and Linda Travis for $18,000. It had been on the city’s condemned list. They restored the home and added a den and carport area in 1998. Stairs were added, and they finished out the attic in 2004.
A Home Built for Family and Faith
Dale and Linda Travis raised their 4 children in this home. Dale Travis was the pastor of Family Life Church here in Amarillo. Not only did they raise a family in this historic home, but the Travis family also opened their doors to countless church members, small groups, and many more while teaching the word of God or for gatherings. Dale passed in 2016. In 2022, his son Jonathan and wife Rachael purchased the home from his mother, Linda, keeping it in the Travis family while raising their 5 children.
Jonathan and Rachael are ready to pass the home on to another family who can love it as much as the Travis family has since 1988. A home where others can raise a family, host gatherings, and make precious memories like the Travis family.
