A tragic incident in Peoria, Arizona, has resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy, Theo Sabo, after he was left inside a hot vehicle for several hours following a family baptism celebration. The boy’s parents, Mihail and Anca Sabo, have attributed the heartbreaking event to a miscommunication within the family, specifically involving their 14-year-old son.
According to authorities, the family returned home from church around 1 p.m. on Sunday for a gathering marking another child’s baptism. It wasn’t until approximately 3:46 p.m. that family members realized Theo was missing.
His mother later found him unresponsive inside the family’s car. The Peoria Police Department received multiple emergency calls about the unresponsive child, and despite efforts to save him, Theo was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
On that day, temperatures in Peoria soared to 103 degrees, contributing to the severity of the situation.
During a court hearing, the family’s attorney revealed that Mihail had asked their teenage son to remove Theo from the car, but the 14-year-old testified that he did not recall being given that responsibility. Following investigations, both Mihail and Anca Sabo were arrested and charged with negligent homicide and child abuse.
They were ordered held on a $150,000 bond and instructed not to have contact with each other. The Sabos are scheduled for a status conference on September 21 and a preliminary hearing on September 23.
The family’s attorney emphasized that the parents never intended harm, describing the mother as a grieving parent in profound pain. Friends and members of the church community have rallied around the Sabos, establishing a GoFundMe campaign to support the family through their loss.
The fundraiser aims to cover funeral and memorial expenses, as well as other immediate financial needs during this difficult time. As of now, the campaign has raised over $273,000 toward its $300,000 goal.
