She helmed Rich Table in San Francisco, which regularly lands in top 10 best restaurants lists. She left her chef de cuisine role last year to focus on opening her highly anticipated restaurant, Good Morning 96. While she’s been prepping her new restaurant, she’s been popping up at Michelin-starred restaurants such as Nisei and Angler SF and collaborating with award-winning chefs.
Ho, though, says working in the kitchen of one of Oakland’s highly regarded traditional Chinese seafood restaurants made her feel the most nervous out of all. Growing up on Guam, with a grandfather who ran a restaurant in Hong Kong, she remembers being told that being a chef wasn’t an appropriate career for a girl.
“It’s a whole different realm,” Ho said. “Those types of kitchens function so differently than fine dining. They don’t normally let women in those kitchens. It’s a very older generation, male-dominated industry – more so than current times.”
