A surge in cremations is changing Arkansas’ funeral business

An Arkansas funeral home operator filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in April, saying business slowed because more customers are choosing cremation rather than burial.

Buie Funeral Home Inc. of Sheridan listed $4.2 million in debts and $1.6 million in assets in its bankruptcy filing. Its owners, James “Wesley” Cole and Donna Cole, were going through a divorce in 2025, which also caused financial issues, Wesley Cole said in bankruptcy filings…
