LINN COUNTY, Iowa — The Cedar Rapids-Linn County Solid Waste Agency can now reject some loads from large construction projects as it works to keep recyclable materials out of its landfill.
Large construction projects, including the QTS and Google data centers being built in Cedar Rapids, can generate significant amounts of waste. The Solid Waste Agency said material from those projects contributed to a recent increase in waste arriving at the landfill, with staff finding recyclable clean wood, scrap metal and cardboard mixed into loads.
The agency’s board approved a resolution allowing it to require large construction projects to separate those three materials before bringing waste to the landfill.
