NASCAR Ironman Dave Marcis Got Robbed While Out of Town, and the Case Cracked Open at a Flea Market

Dave Marcis spent 35 years getting shot at by other drivers’ fenders across 883 Sunday afternoons, and he never once needed a bodyguard for it. Somebody finally caught him off guard anyway — not at a superspeedway, but at his own house in Arden, North Carolina, while the 85-year-old was back visiting his native Wisconsin.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office logged a break-in report on Marcis’ home on Aug. 28. Whoever got inside wasn’t after loose change or a used television — the sheriff’s office’s own case notation specifically flagged high-dollar items as the target. Guns, racing memorabilia, jewelry and other personal belongings went out the door, according to a friend who posted about the burglary the following day and confirmed Marcis was out of state when it happened.

Buncombe County detectives didn’t work the case alone. They partnered with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, and within days had two names: 27-year-old Hailey Dawn Bowlin and 29-year-old Cameron Joseph Samotis. Bowlin was booked into the Henderson County Detention Center on Sept. 2, facing second degree burglary, possession of a firearm by a felon, larceny of a firearm, larceny after breaking and entering, and five counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Samotis was booked on a single second degree burglary charge. State records show Bowlin was already on probation from a prior stolen-goods conviction, which means this arrest likely triggers a probation violation hearing on top of whatever the new charges bring — a detail that tends to matter more to a judge than the fresh case itself…
