AUGUSTA, Ga. – Gas prices are taking a bigger bite out of household budgets than they were a year ago.

According to AAA, the national average retail price for regular gasoline is $4.44 per gallon Thursday, up from $3.20 a year ago.

After the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time in three years, Georgia financial experts say borrowers should brace for more possible hikes.

The difference is more stark in Augusta, where the average is $4.18, up from $2.90 a year ago. Aiken’s current average is $4.12, up from $2.83, a year ago.
