Mount Pleasant man sentenced in nationwide COVID relief fraud sweep

BOSTON, MASS. (WCSC) — A Mount Pleasant man who used federal pandemic relief funds to build a personal home and buy a luxury truck was among those targeted in a massive nationwide enforcement surge against COVID-19 fraud, federal prosecutors announced.

David Breen, 54, was sentenced in July to three years of probation, including one year of home detention, after pleading guilty to theft of government property. Federal officials said Breen secured approximately $1.5 million in Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) funds for “Fun Zone,” an entity he used to operate Pinz, a bowling alley and entertainment center in Milford, Massachusetts.

Instead of using the funds as working capital to keep the business afloat, Breen diverted more than $1.1 million to build a house for himself in South Carolina and make a down payment on a $111,000 truck. He was ordered to pay $1,148,368 in restitution…
