CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The recent departures of five senior leaders from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are raising concerns among some current and former district officials, who say the exodus comes at an unusually turbulent time for the state’s second-largest school system.
Within the past week, Deputy Superintendent Melissa Balknight, Chief Financial Officer Kelly Kluttz, Chief Operations Officer Tim Ivey, and Associate Superintendent for Human Resources Tangela Williams announced plans to retire effective Jan. 1, 2027. Chief Human Resources Officer Angela Wood resigned from her position on Sept. 14.

The departures follow the controversy surrounding Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill, who was suspended by the school board this summer while an outside investigation examined allegations involving administrative and operational oversight. The board ultimately reinstated Hill after the investigation concluded in August.
