Well, retiring baby boomers in Austin are driving 80 miles down I-35 South to another Texas city: San Antonio. In fact, a WalletHub study ranks the Alamo City among the top 50 best places to retire to for 2026, and the second-best in Texas.
Also known as Military City USA, San Antonio is the biggest beneficiary of Austin residents born between 1946 and 1964 who relocate for retirement, according to U-Haul’s Midyear Migration Report. The rental truck company analyzed data between July 2025 and June 2026, looking at one-way transactions between locations, broken down by generational demographics. While Gen Xers leaving Austin are most likely to move to Houston, and millennials are headed to Denver, baby boomers aged 62 and 80 are headed to San Antonio in the highest numbers…
