SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — University of Utah Police are investigating multiple threatening emails sent overnight to campus offices in what they believe to be a case of swatting.
According to a campus alert from the University of Utah Department of Public Safety, the department is monitoring threatening emails sent to campus offices by what appears to be a single individual. Police are investigating and working to identify the source, but they don’t believe there is an active threat.
Instead, police believe that this was a swatting incident, a form of harassment where a false report or threat is targeted at a specific individual, organization, or location with the intent of mobilizing an emergency response. Swatting hoaxes cause considerable disruption.
