Ed Sheeran Faces Backlash After Dropping Macklemore from Tour Amid Palestine War Comments
Ed Sheeran has come under fire for removing rapper Macklemore from his Loop Tour lineup following the artist’s on-stage remarks supporting Palestine during recent concerts. Macklemore voiced “Free Palestine” during his performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5, also delivering his protest song “Hinds’ Feet on High Places.”
In response to Macklemore’s dismissal, several of Sheeran’s opening acts-Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, and Finneas-have announced they will no longer perform on the tour, showing solidarity with the rapper. Meanwhile, Sheeran has adjusted the start time for his upcoming show in Philadelphia on September 19.
Public relations expert Dylan Thomas Cotter weighed in on the controversy, advising Sheeran to acknowledge his decision openly and address public concerns. “When a public figure makes such a grave error in judgment, the best course is to own it fully, validate the public’s reaction, and outline steps to make amends,” Cotter said. He added that Macklemore has earned widespread respect for consistently using his platform to advocate for human rights, and that audiences tend to respond positively to artists who engage authentically in activism.
Despite the upheaval, Sheeran’s Philadelphia concert at Lincoln Financial Field will proceed, though with a revised schedule. The event, initially set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with Sheeran’s performance slated for 8 p.m., has been pushed back so the show now starts at 8 p.m. Ticketmaster confirms the rest of the tour will maintain the original start times.
Sources close to the tour told TMZ that preparations for the Philadelphia show have been rapidly evolving, but there is confidence that Sheeran can deliver a solo performance if necessary. The singer is experienced in performing large-scale concerts accompanied only by his guitar.
Security measures have been increased for the Philadelphia event amid planned pro-Palestine demonstrations near the venue. Representatives for Ed Sheeran have been contacted for comment but have yet to respond.
