EUGENE, Ore. – J.H. Baxter shut down its west Eugene operations more than three years ago, but concerns surrounding the site are far from over.
The company opened in west Eugene in 1943, using chemicals such as creosote and pentachlorophenol to treat wood. It stopped operations in 2022.
In 2025, a federal judge ordered the two companies responsible to pay $1.5 million in criminal fines and serve five years of probation. Company President Georgia Baxter-Krawsus was also sentenced to 90 days in prison and one year of supervised release…
