Extreme wildfire danger is ongoing this weekend. It only takes one spark in these conditions. In addition to the wildfires that ignited last week, a few wildfires sparked on Saturday afternoon across the state. One wildfire has even begun in southwestern Little Rock in Pulaski County.
The air is very dry, and it’s a very hot day for mid-to-late September in Arkansas. In fact, Little Rock has so far tied its daily high temperature record today, 100 degrees. That record was set in 2005. This as of 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 19.
70 of 75 counties in Arkansas are under burn bans, but let’s act as if the burn bans are statewide. It’s also strongly encouraged to avoid all outdoor activities that involve sparks or flames.
The wildfire danger remains extreme through the weekend.
A cool front pushes in early next week. It won’t bring great rainfall totals, unfortunately, but it will be a temperature-difference-maker. Temperatures drop into the 80s mid-to-late next week behind the front.
We could still see a small chance of showers and storms ahead of and along the front. On Sunday, September 20, there’s even a very low risk of a strong to severe storm in northwestern Arkansas. This timing is late Sunday into Monday morning, and the risk is mainly for damaging wind gust potential.
Monday and Tuesday have small rain chances that include much of the rest of the state, but still, some will not see rain with this front.
